          GRAINGER SIGNS OFF: THE DAILY bids a fond farewell to
     Staff Writer BATES GRAINGER, as today is his last day with
     our publication.  Bates, an invaluable member of our staff
     since August '98, will begin his pursuit of a Masters in
     Sports Administration at GA State Univ. in Atlanta this
     fall.  We wish Bates all the best in his future endeavors! 
          THE SUN SETS ON THE WEST? In Long Beach, Doug Krikorian
     cites two NBA GMs and "several other league sources" as
     saying that Lakers Exec VP/Basketball Operations JERRY WEST
     has told team Owner JERRY BUSS that "he's stepping down." 
     Sources say West's "health turned out to be the compelling
     factor" for leaving (Long Beach PRESS-TELEGRAM, 7/14).
          MORE: USA Swimming has promoted MARY WAGNER to Dir of
     Public & Media Relations, replacing CHARLIE SNYDER, who has
     joined sports info site, spiz.com (THE DAILY). ...ED RYAN,
     Senior Manager of Sports Medicine for the USOC and medical
     coordinator/athletic trainer for two U.S. Olympic teams, has
     been promoted to USOC Dir of Sports Medicine (USOC).
