PATRIOTS INK COMMERCE DEAL FOR NAMING RIGHTS ON NJ BALLPARK

NJ-based Commerce Bank will pay $3.5M over the next 15
years for naming rights to 6,300-seat Somerset (NJ)
Ballpark, the home of the Atlantic League Somerset Patriots,
according to Matthew Futterman of the Newark STAR-LEDGER.
The deal comes as the ballpark, which is owned by Somerset
County, hosts the league's All-Star Game tonight. In
addition to naming rights, the deal includes a joint
marketing agreement between the team and the bank. Commerce
will "provide a link to the team on its Web site," and
"eventually fans will be able to buy tickets to the
Patriots' games through the bank." Patriots Chair Steve
Kalafer: "When you factor everything in, I think this really
is one of the biggest deals in minor league sports."
Futterman writes that for Somerset County, the deal "adds
$70,000 a year to the growing windfall the government stands
to make off a stadium that is averaging about 5,000 fans."
Last year, the county "cleared" a $100,000 profit on the
park and Kalafer expects another profit "substantially
higher" for the county this year (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 7/12).
