SPORTS ON THE WEB: INT'L SITES TANGLE FOR EYEBALLS

The launch of SportSitio.com, a sports Web site geared
toward Latinos, was examined by Jose Alvarez of the SAN
DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, who wrote that the site considers its
main competitors as Sportsya.com and ESPN.com. SportSitio
VP/Business Development Matthew Kliber: "We are hoping to
become the largest online network of sports properties, news
information and streaming video for Latin America and the
U.S. Hispanic market." Investors have already put $2M into
the project, and by the end of 2001, the company "expects"
to have invested a total of $10M, mostly from corporate
sponsors. The site currently attracts 35,000 users daily,
     3,000 of which are new visitors (S.D. UNION-TRIBUNE, 7/8).
Meanwhile, in Ft. Lauderdale, Laura Lorek cited Sportsya.com
CEO Emilio Romano as saying that the site expects its
business-to-business sales of sporting goods to become 70%
of its business. Romano: "B2B is going to be the biggest
     part of our e-commerce strategy" (SUN-SENTINEL, 7/9).
ONLINE: The Orange Bowl Committee has won the rights to
the domain name www.orangebowl.com from IL resident Thomas
Cornelison, who offered to sell the address to the committee
for $3,000-5,000. Instead, the Orange Bowl Committee went
to court, which hastened the settlement. Orange Bowl
Assistant Exec Dir Stephen Nebrat: "We're a nonprofit
organization. We don't have money to throw around" (MIAMI
HERALD, 7/8)....In Dallas, Dennis Huspeni profiles
myteam.com, which "promises to make organized sports for
amateurs and children a lot more organized." Huspeni:
"Whether the company can deliver is yet to be seen.
Although many Dallas-area teams are listed on the site, few
seem to be using all the features, but site employees say
they are continuing to work out the bugs and simplify the
     setup" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 7/11).
