FINAL U.S. OPEN NUMBERS: EVEN ESPN GETS BOOST FROM TIGER

NBC earned an 8.1/21 final national Nielsen rating for
Sunday's final round coverage of Tiger Woods' 15-stroke
victory at the U.S. Open. The rating was the highest for a
U.S. Open since ABC's coverage of David Graham's win in '81,
which drew an 8.9 rating. The combined average for Saturday
and Sunday was a 6.7/17, the best two-day performance for
U.S. Open coverage since ABC's 6.9 rating for Tom Watson's
win at Pebble Beach in '82. NBC won Saturday's primetime
slot with a 6.5/14 rating with extended golf coverage. NBC
projects that 53 million viewers saw all or part of the 15-
plus hours of coverage on Saturday and Sunday, making it the
most-watched U.S. Open in history. The previous high was 44
million viewers over 14 hours in '97 (NBC).
ESPN GETS SECOND-HIGHEST GOLF RATING: In Chicago, Ed
Sherman reports ESPN's Friday night coverage pulled in a
     3.04 (2,380,000 HHs), the net's second-most number of HHs
for a golf event since '82 (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/21).
