The XFL, slated to begin play in February 2001,
formally announced this morning that Memphis will be one of
the league's eight charter cities. The team will play its
five regular-season home games at the Liberty Bowl (XFL).
In Nashville, Jeff Legwold notes Memphis is a city "still
showing significant anger at the NFL's snub" during the '93
expansion process. When the Oilers played the '97 season at
the Liberty Bowl, the team averaged "an NFL-low" 28,028 fans
(Nashville TENNESSEAN, 6/21).
XFL RECRUITMENT: An online recruiting initiative,
launched by the XFL and developed by TeamWork Consulting
Inc. Founder Buffy Filippell, generated over 1,200 job
applications in the first two days from potential team and
league employees. A link for the job application can be
found at the top of the XFL.com home page (XFL). The
SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Noah Liberman reports that the XFL
is seeking more than 100 people for front-office positions
and has "licensed" TeamWork Online's database technology
which accepts applications online. The "strength" of the
software is that it allows an employer to search or cross-
search the applications by any of the criteria, such as
applicant's location and education level, and to "notify any
or all candidates via e-mail with updates or new job
postings." In the first 12 days, "without any outside
promotion," the league received more than 500 applications
for administrative positions (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/19).
