LEAGUE NOTES

In Detroit, Chris McCosky wrote that CBA Owner Isiah
Thomas "denied" a report Wednesday that he was in Chicago
"trying to sell" the CBA (see THE DAILY, 6/14). Thomas:
"I've been [in Indianapolis] all day" (DETROIT NEWS,
6/15)....USA TODAY's Hal Bodley reports that negotiations
for a new MLB umpires contract "have stalled, and no
meetings are planned." MLB Exec VP/Operations Sandy
Alderson, on negotiations: "Things have not gone as well the
last couple of weeks as they had before." Meanwhile, Bodley
notes that MLB "will unveil" a new Tiffany & Co. designed
World Series trophy in N.Y. on June 27. The trophy will
replace the current one, which has been in use since '67 and
features the flags of each team (USA TODAY, 6/16)....In
Edmonton, Perry Lefko writes that the CFL BOG "will huddle
today" for its annual general meeting and "it could turn
ugly behind closed doors." The "primary -- and highly
volatile -- topic du jour" could be the leadership of Chair
& acting Commissioner John Tory and President Jeff Giles.
One source, on the meetings: "Expect fireworks." Giles, who
said that he "was not aware" of an article suggesting the
league may have "one less president," asked "half-
seriously": "Am I going to be fired? As far as I know, I
have a lot of supporters" (EDMONTON SUN, 6/16).
