DO CARDS WANT TO BE A COWBOYS RIVAL? TEAM EYEING SAN ANTONIO

With the NFL Cardinals' hopes for a new stadium hinging
on the outcome of a November referendum in Maricopa County,
AZ, a source close to the team "expects the club will move
to relocate in San Antonio" if the stadium measure fails,
according to Jerry Magee of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. If
they moved to San Antonio, the Cardinals could play in the
Alamodome "until a stadium there was constructed." Although
Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones "might be averse to losing San
Antonio as a pocket of Cowboys popularity," the source noted
that Jones would now be "creating a new rival" with a team
in San Antonio. Magee wrote that TX-based Southwestern Bell
Chair Edward Whitacre might play a role "in connection with
a possible Cardinals shift," as Southwestern Bell "could be
a powerful ally for an NFL franchise" in the city (SAN DIEGO
     UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/14). CBS SportsLine's Len Pasquarelli
cited sources saying the city "is prepared to deliver a new
facility," while the team plays in the Alamodome until one
     is finished (CBS SportsLine, 5/13).
