UT residents "can forget about attending some of the
premier" 2002 Winter Olympic events, as SLOC trustees were
told that about 90% of those seats "will be filled by
sponsors, not spectators," according to Lisa Riley Roche of
the DESERET NEWS. But organizers "promised" they'll set
aside 160,000 of the 1.6 million seats for state residents.
Roche added that "nearly half" of the tickets available to
the public will be sold in "Olympic Experience" packages to
"several pre-selected events" (DESERET NEWS, 5/11).
NOTES: In Houston, Jody Goldstein notes the city's
hosting of the Olympic Media Summit this weekend, a four-day
event that provides the national media with "access to the
athletes and USOC members" heading to the 2000 Games.
Goldstein notes the event "is a coup" for Houston, which is
bidding for the 2012 Games (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 5/12). Also
in Houston, John Lopez notes Houston's landing of the Summit
"was no small accomplishment," as this weekend's meetings
marks the first time the Summit has not been held at the
USOC's CO headquarters or in a U.S. Olympic city (HOUSTON
CHRONICLE, 5/12)....NBC gathered 350 of its "key Olympic
personnel" in Salt Lake City this week for a three-day
seminar geared toward the net's plans for its 2000 Olympics
coverage (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/12).
