BRISTLING IN BRISTOL: ESPN DENIES IT DEFAMED W/UT CHARGES

In response to defamation lawsuits filed by Univ. of TN
(UT) OG Reggie Ridley and former UT AD tutor Victoria Gray
(see THE DAILY, 2/28), ESPN stated that UT athletic
officials "are to blame if its series of articles alleging
academic fraud at UT harmed" Ridley and Gray, according to
Chris Low of the Nashville TENNESSEAN. ESPN filed the
response Tuesday while asking a federal court to "dismiss
the lawsuits." Ridley and Gray claim that ESPN knowingly
aired "false" statements made about them by former UT
athletic department writing center Dir Robin Wright. But
ESPN says that it "stands by its work" and named UT AD Doug
Dickey, Associate AD Carmen Tegano and former UT Tutor
assistant Gerry Dickey "among those responsible for the
     charges" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 4/28).
