Washington Sports & Entertainment Chair Abe Pollin and
Baltimore developer David Cordish yesterday signed documents
that "will finally set into a motion" the new Capital
Centre, a "long-delayed," $85M retail, restaurant and
entertainment complex at the site of USAirways Arena,
according to Eric Fisher of the WASHINGTON TIMES. The
development project will include a "never-before-seen
combination of high profile sports entities" with Wizards
President of Basketball Operations Michael Jordan, who will
be a co-developer of the project, and Magic Johnson, who
will be the "lead tenant" with a 16-screen cinema. Fisher
adds that the Redskins could also have a presence at the
facility, as the team holds a five-year option to assume a
five-acre parcel of land, located at the northeast end of
the Capital Centre property, and could relocate the team
offices and training facility from its current location in
Ashburn, VA. The Centre "could also be the future home" of
the AFL team Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder "plans to field"
in 2003 (WASHINGTON TIMES, 4/18).
