TV MONITOR: Last night's 10:00pm ET 60-minute edition
of FSN's "National Sports Report" led with Jets WR Keyshawn
Johnson being traded to the Bucs for two first-round draft
picks, followed by Rangers-Yankees. FSN's first report on
the NHL playoffs, at 25:11 into the broadcast, was Oilers-
Stars, with a total of 2:05 of NHL coverage. Last night's
11:00pm ET 30-minute edition of CNN/SI's "Sports Tonight"
led with Rangers-Yankees, followed by Indians-A's. CNN/SI's
first report on the NHL playoffs, at 12:01, was Oilers-
Stars, with a total of 2:13 of NHL coverage. Last night's
1:00am ET 60-minute edition of ESPN's "SportsCenter" (late
due to "Wednesday Night Baseball") led with Oilers-Stars,
followed by Sharks-Blues. ESPN's first non-NHL report, at
6:50, was Cardinals-Astros. The net devoted a total of 9:23
to the NHL (THE DAILY).
NOTES: An IN Univ. athletics department official and
the son of men's basketball coach Bobby Knight said
yesterday that a videotape showing Knight "putting his hand
of the neck" of former player Neil Reed, which CNN/SI aired
on Tuesday's "Sports Tonight," "likely was leaked to the
media" by a former assistant coach," Ron Felling, who was
"fired last year" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 4/13). CNN/SI's Fred
Hickman called the Knight controversy "a full-fledged
scandal" ("Sports Tonight," CNN/SI, 4/12)....In Chicago,
Phil Rosenthal, on Donna deVarona's age/sex discrimination
suit against ABC Sports: "This should be a quick case
because, of course, TV discriminates on the basis of age.
So does sport. Young stars never seem to complain when
they're richly rewarded at the start of their careers"
(CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/13)....In Baltimore, Jon Morgan
reports that the Ravens have hired Fox Sports' Dick Stockton
and Matt Millen to broadcast the team's four preseason
games, a move that the team hopes will "boost advertising
revenue" for the telecasts. Ravens VP/New Business
Development & Marketing Dennis Mannion, on the move: "I
think it brings a real professional feel to the games and
makes it feel [like] you are getting the A-team" (Baltimore
SUN, 4/13)....The Trail Blazers reached a five-year deal
making KXL-AM the team's flagship radio station. KXL
replaces KEX-AM effective at the end of the 2000 season.
KXL has hired CBS SportsLine's Eric Ross to host a nightly
talk show beginning May 1 (T'Blazers).
