WANG BID HITS ROADBLOCK AS FORMER OWNER WANTS BETTER TERMS

Computer Associates Int'l CEO Charles Wang's $175M bid
to buy the Islanders "was stalled for the moment by legal
issues" with former Owner John Pickett, who "retains shares
in the team" and is "looking for more favorable terms,"
according to Valenti, Young & Hahn of NEWSDAY. But the sale
of the team continues to be "imminent." Also, former EMI
Exec Charles Koppelman and former MSG President Bob
Gutkowski yesterday "removed themselves from the running" to
buy the team (NEWSDAY, 4/13). Gutkowski: "Although we are
personally disappointed in this outcome, we wish Mr. Wang,
who is a Long Islander, much luck and success." In N.Y.,
Barry Baum writes that an "impeccable source involved in the
sales talks" said Wang "remains optimistic" that his bid
"will soon be completed." Baum notes that it "all depends
on whether" Pickett and his group "can agree" by next week
how to distribute the money they will make from the sale and
"other matters relating to the sale" (N.Y. POST, 4/13).
