SMI Chair Bruton Smith's proposal for a second Winston
Cup event at TX Motor Speedway, this one featuring a $10M
purse, got "everyone's attention along the Winston Cup pit
road" in Martinsville, VA, over the weekend, according to
Mike Mulhern of the WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL. But "not
everybody was thrilled to hear about it. Maybe $10 million
just doesn't go as far as it used to." Car Owner Richard
Childress: "When? November? That's hunting season." But
Mulhern wrote, "In light of the growing war between NASCAR
and its current television partners, Smith's added promise
of a national television audience for such a postseason
special event for Cup teams has the ring of something that
NASCAR might just buy into." In addition, Mulhern noted
with the "rumblings" that CBS didn't do "much" to promote
the Daytona 500 and the "heavy-handed way" CBS handled the
rain-delayed BGN Albertson's 300 (see THE DAILY, 4/3),
"there was some speculation ... that NASCAR might now be
interested in buying out the CBS contracts" for the Kmart
400 in June and Pepsi 400 in July and "turning those races
over to a more friendly network" (W-S JOURNAL, 4/8).
