WILL NAACP PRESSURE SERENA AND TIGER TO BOYCOTT SC EVENTS?

The NAACP continues to call for an economic boycott of
SC due to the Confederate flag flying over the state
Capitol, and ESPN's Melissa Stark reported yesterday the
NAACP would not say if it has "approached" Serena Williams
about the issue. Williams is scheduled to compete in the
Family Circle Cup at Hilton Head next month, but declined
ESPN's request for an interview. Stark noted that last
year, Tiger Woods played in the MCI Classic at Hilton Head,
and when asked about a possible boycott of this year's
event, Woods told ESPN, "I really have no comment. I'm a
golfer. I'd just like to stay out of it." Woods has not
said if he will compete in this year's tournament next
month. State Sen. Darrell Jackson: "If Tiger Woods would
say, 'I'm sorry, but this year I cannot come,' it would have
a tremendous impact. It moves [the flag controversy] from
people thinking that it's just a few radical people, such as
the NAACP and their sympathizers, to mainstream people who
say, 'No, we're not coming also.'" State Sen. Glenn
McConnell: "I hope the sports people stay out of it. If
they get involved in politics, it's a bruising game, the
     political game" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 3/26).
