UNITED EXECS COUNTER GARBER'S CLAIM THAT UNITED SALE NEAR

The "long-awaited sale" of DC United "remains months
away," despite MLS Commissioner Don Garber's pledge that it
would be completed within four weeks, according to a source
of Wright & Fisher of the WASHINGTON TIMES. Garber had said
last week that the "nearly two-year quest to find a buyer
for the money-losing team was very nearly over and that a
deal should be struck by mid-April." United President & GM
Kevin Payne, on the four-week timeframe: "That's what you
read. It's still an ongoing process." Although N.Y.
investment firm E.M. Warburg Pincus "remains firmly in the
hunt" for the team, it "is balking about an asking price of
at least" $25M. A league player agent: "How does MLS come
up with ($25 to $30 million)? What power on the world-wide
market does MLS have to command that kind of money for one
of its clubs? Instead of selling a club, the league wants
potential buyers to invest in the league instead of a
specific team or market. Anybody who buys a team in this
league can expect to lose $10 or $15 million in the next few
years." Meanwhile, current lead Owner Soros Fund Management
"is unwilling to sink any additional money into the team
until a buyer is found" and has "stopped meeting its cash-
call obligations with MLS" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 3/22).
