NAMES IN THE NEWS

          After CBS' "60 Minutes" recently aired a feature on
     Hawks C DIKEMBE MUTOMBO's plan to build a $3M, 300-bed
     hospital in his native Congo, more than 80 e-mails were sent
     to the Hawks' offices "offering contributions" (SI, 3/20
     issue)....The HOCKEY NEWS' McKenzie & Cressman report that
     Ontario Hockey League Barrie Colts coach/GM BILL STEWART was
     "stripped of his GM duties after an 18-year-old Ukrainian
     player was twice smuggled across the Canada-U.S. border in
     the lower baggage compartment" of the team bus (THE HOCKEY
     NEWS, 3/17 issue)....MN Gov. JESSE VENTURA appeared on
     CNBC's "Hardball" and "fielded a question from the audience
     about the way" the Internet has "contributed to the growing
     problem of violence" in the U.S.  Ventura: "[W]e ought to do
     something about hockey.  You know, hockey's the only sport I
     know where fighting is acceptable" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 3/21). 
     ....In N.Y., Mitchell Fink writes that SNOOP DOGG and his
     "posse" arrived at the NBA Store 15 minutes before it opened
     on Sunday to get Lakers merchandise before Sunday's game
     against the Knicks.  Snoop Dogg "dropped $1,500 on Lakers
     gear (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 3/21)....NBC's Jay Leno, on GEORGE W.
     BUSH: "A reporter asked Bush how he felt about the NRA and
     Bush said, 'Hey, I think the LAKERS are going to win
     everything'" ("Tonight Show," NBC, 3/20).
