WITH EDDIE OFF THE TEAM, 49ERS MOVE FORWARD ON STADIUM

Now that Eddie DeBartolo "is gone from the 49ers
ownership scene," S.F. Mayor Willie Brown said yesterday
that "he expects quick progress on building a new stadium
and mall at Candlestick Point," according to Edward Epstein
of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Mayor Brown plans to meet with team
co-Owners Denise DeBartolo York and her husband, John, to
discuss "finding a way to move forward with plans for the
stadium and giant mall that have been delayed for more than
two years," ever since DeBartolo experienced legal trouble
in LA. Brown said Denise York called him on Sunday after
reaching a deal with her brother. Brown: "Denise was so
excited. She was yelling, 'I did it! I did it! This is
your new owner, Mr. Mayor'" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 3/21).
NFL'S GOLD RUSH: In Boston, Will McDonough reports that
the NFL filed papers in a MN court "looking to penalize" the
49ers and three agents for "cheating under the salary cap."
The league "believes the 49ers cheated at least three times
under the salary cap in contracts involving" QB Steve Young,
former QB Jim Druckenmiller and former TE Brent Jones. The
case "revolves" around three agents in the deal, Leigh
Steinberg and Jeffrey Moorad, on behalf of Young and Jones,
and Gary Wichard for Druckenmiller (BOSTON GLOBE, 3/21).
