ANOTHER OSCAR CEREMONY IN HOLLYWOOD WITH STAPLES BOUT

Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley, one of boxing's
"brightest talents," formally announced Monday that they
will fight June 17 at Staples Center "in what will be the
biggest-money fight in the history" of CA, according to
Michael Rosenthal of the L.A. DAILY NEWS. Also, promoter
Bob Arum announced that "he is negotiating to stage three
more boxing cards featuring big-name fighters the same
weekend at other sites in L.A." Rosenthal writes that the
city "hasn't seen a fight of this magnitude since the late
1960s and early 70s." In addition, "no fight even
approaches this one in terms of money," as gate receipts
"could exceed" $8M if the arena sells out. De La Hoya will
earn $8M and Mosley $4.5M, "although both could make more"
if PPV sales go well. Staples Center President Tim Leiweke
"has said that this fight in large part will determine
whether Staples will bring big-time boxing to L.A. on a
regular basis." Leiweke "wants to see no empty seats" and
an "electric atmosphere" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 3/21).
