WILL THE KNIGHTS' PURSUIT OF BALLPARK SLOW HORNETS' BID?

The Triple A Charlotte Knights, whose current home is
in Fort Mill, SC, could have preliminary designs and cost
estimates for an uptown Charlotte ballpark ready "as early
as next month," according to a top team official cited by
Lauren Markoe of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER (See THE DAILY,
2/15). A Knights stadium plan could come before city
officials at the same time the Hornets are lobbying for
public assistance for an uptown arena. Both teams "are
likely to seek some" public funding, and the "most likely
source" is revenue from the local hotel-motel tax of 6%,
half of which "can go only to" tourist-related projects.
That tax is now paying off the debt on the city-owned
Charlotte Coliseum and "several other" civic projects.
Charlotte City Council member Lynn Wheeler: "We definitely
have a finite amount of money for a sports facility so they
would be in competition with each other." Knights GM Tim
Newman had "no estimates yet for the cost" to construct an
uptown ballpark for the team (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 3/17).
