REPORT HAS DEAL ON NHL PARTICIPATION IN 2002 GAMES NEAR

European hockey teams have "dropped their threat of
preventing" NHL players from playing in the 2002 Winter
Olympics, "making it almost certain" the players will
participate in the Salt Lake Games, according to Alan Adams
of the NATIONAL POST. The Europeans, who "want an increase
in transfer payments in a new wide-ranging pact" with the
NHL and the IIHF, "had vowed to block" NHL participation in
the Olympics. But Swedish Elite League Chair Goran
Fritzell, who "was spearheading the boycott," said that the
teams "will negotiate the release" of European players to
the NHL "on a team-by-team basis once the current agreement
expires at the end of next season." Fritzell: "We can't
stop players from going, but we can get better pay for them.
We'll have to deal with this ourselves. It's time to bypass
     the IIHF" (NATIONAL POST, 3/14).
