LION DOWN ON THE JOB? FORD FIELD CONTRACTORS DECLINE WORK

The Lions said yesterday that the team's future home,
Ford Field, "remains on schedule to open" in mid-2002
despite the withdrawal of the main contractors, according to
John Gallagher of the DETROIT FREE PRESS, who writes that
contractors Barton Malow and Walbridge Aldinger "declined to
participate" in bidding after the team decided to re-bid the
stadium project. Lions VP Tom Lewand said that contractors
Turner Construction, Clark Enterprises and Huber, Hunt &
Nichols "are in the running" to manage construction of the
stadium. Lewand adds that the Lions expect to pick a new
contractor in "early spring," with construction starting
"shortly after that." Gallagher notes that the need to re-
bid "might cause delays" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 2/24).
