DAY-ONE OF GRIFFEY SALES BRISK; ALLEN/GEIGER COMIC HEROES?

While "first-day sales" of Ken Griffey Jr. merchandise
were "brisk" at Cincinnati-area retailers, "prices kept some
at bay," according to Jim Hannah of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER,
who notes a replica Griffey home jersey is selling for $80
at the Reds Dugout store, T-shirts for $15 and memorabilia
baseballs for $6. The Dugout received its first order of
Griffey merchandise, including 900 replica jerseys and five
styles of T-shirts, Tuesday. Dick's Sporting Goods is
taking out quarter-page newspaper ads informing fans that it
has Griffey merchandise (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 2/17).
SUPER HEROES? In Philadelphia, Phil Jasner reports that
76ers C Matt Geiger and G Allen Iverson are "depicted as
Matt Tiger and Alien All-Star," respectively, in a comic
book the team will give away to the first 5,000 kids under
14 who attend tomorrow night's game against the Cavs. The
comic, titled, "The Night That They Saved Basketball," tells
the story of Matt Tiger and Alien All-Star coming "to the
rescue" when a "villain begins tearing down basketball
courts all over" Philadelphia (PHILA. DAILY NEWS, 2/17).
