NAMES IN THE NEWS

          The DAILY RACING FORM's Richard Eng writes that
     legislation introduced by U.S. Senators SAM BROWNBACK (R-KS)
     and PATRICK LEAHY (D-VT) that would ban "legal wagering on
     amateur sports" was "declared dead 10 days" after the bill
     was introduced. U.S. Representative JIM GIBBONS (R-NV), who
     lobbied against the bill: "There is no appetite among the
     members to move this legislation" (DRF, 2/16)....In DC,
     Barker Davis writes on "high fashion" among basketball
     coaches.  Univ. of UT coach RICK MAJERUS: "I really don't
     notice what other coaches are wearing.  My love life hasn't
     degenerated to that level yet.  If I'm ever looking at
     anything other than the game, it's usually some voluptuous
     thing in the stands" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/16).....U.S.
