          NHL ALL-STAR NOTES: ABC's coverage of the NHL All-Star
     Game was up 23% over last year's 2.2/5 rating on Fox.  The
     game was also up 118% from last year's 1.1 to a 2.4 rating
     in the 18-24 male demo.  The ratings were also up among Men
     18-34 (from a 2.2 to a 2.5); Women 18-24 (from a 0.5 to a
     1.2); and Women 18-34 (from a 1.0 to a 1.3).  Viewership
     also increased in non-traditional hockey markets, including
     Seattle (+133%), Atlanta (+106%), Indianapolis (+100%),
     Orlando (+82%), Kansas City (+69%), Charlotte & Miami
     (+62%), San Diego (+57%), Nashville & Jacksonville (+18%)
     and Cincinnati (+10%)  (THE DAILY).  USA TODAY's Rudy
     Martzke writes that ABC Sports VP/Sports Media Relations
     Mark Mandel "credits cross-promotion between ESPN and ABC"
     for the game's improved rating.  Fox Sports Dir of PR Dan
     Bell: "Cross-promotion.  What a concept" (USA TODAY, 2/11).
          RODMAN, THE MAVS FAD: FSN's coverage of Wednesday's
     Sonics-Mavericks game, which featured the debut of Mavericks
     F Dennis Rodman, earned a 4.8/7 local rating in the Dallas-
     Ft.Worth market, making it the most watched Mavs telecast on
     FSN since the network began receiving ratings in '94.  The
     4.8 rating was 480% better than the team's 1.0 season
     ratings average (FSN).  In N.Y., Peter Vecsey, noting the
     Mavericks issued 100 extra press credentials for Rodman's
     debut: "It was the most media coverage of an event in Texas
     since Waco" (N.Y. POST, 2/11).   
          For broadcast numbers, one ratings point = 1,008,000
     homes.  For cable, "Cov. Area" = % of homes tuned in to that
     program in that network's universe of subscribers.
