BSKYB TO POUR $403M INTO WEB GROWTH: SEEKS SPORTS DOMINATION

BSkyB announced yesterday that it will spend $403M over
the next 12 to 18 months to boost its online presence,
according to Gareth Vaughan of CBS MarketWatch. While BSkyB
announced that it intends to become Britain's "No. 1 sports
Web site within a year," Vaughan writes the move "raises the
stakes for other U.K. sports Web sites such as those run by
the Sports Internet Group PLC, 365 Corp. and Sports.com
Ltd." SportsLine.com-backed Sports.com Managing Dir Tom
Jessiman said that the competition from other sports Web
sites "doesn't worry him." Jessiman: "We're only six months
old and we've already doubled them in [terms] of traffic and
revenue. No one else is moving as fast as us across Europe"
(CBS MarketWatch, 2/10). BSkyB CEO Tony Ball said that the
emphasis will be placed on making skysports.com the "top
sports portal." The company also plans to "combine its
online content investment with unspecified new initiatives
and investments" (Maura Ginty, INTERNET NEWS, 2/9).
