THANKS, BUT NO THANKS: CANADIAN GOV'T PULLS AID PACKAGE

The Canadian Federal Government has "abandoned its
bailout package" for financial aid for Canada's six NHL
franchises "because of widespread criticism of the plan,"
according an AP report. Federal Industry Minister John
Manley: "Canadians have made their views known on taxpayers'
assistance to professional hockey." The government was
"prepared to provide up to about" C$2M annually to each team
to keep them in Canada. But Manley now "hinted" that some
Canadian teams could be in "danger of moving" (AP, 1/21).
