MEDIA NOTES

          TV MONITOR: Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of CNN/SI's
     "Sports Tonight" led with Lakers-Bucks, followed by Knicks-
     Pistons.  A report on the death of Hornets G Bobby Phills
     aired 3:25 into the broadcast.  Highlights of Braves P John
     Rocker's interview with ESPN's Peter Gammons aired at 6:56. 
     Last night's 11:00pm ET edition of ESPN's "SportsCenter" led
     with the death of Phills, followed by Lakers-Bucks. 
     Gammons' interview with Rocker aired at 10:44.  Last night's
     11:00pm ET edition of FSN's "Primetime" led with the death
     of Phills, followed by Cavs-Trail Blazers.  "Primetime" did
     not cover Gammons' interview with Rocker (THE DAILY).  
          FEEL THE SYNERGY! Gammons' interview with Rocker first
     aired in-full on last night's "20/20" on ABC, with
     highlights shown on ESPN's "SportsCenter," ESPNews and
     today's "GMA."  Gammons also appeared live on today's "GMA"
     to discuss the interview.  The interview is scheduled to air
     tonight on ESPN's "Up Close" (THE DAILY).  Gammons, on
     Rocker speaking to him in his first post-SI interview:
     "There are an awful lot of people in news with better
     interviewing skills than I have.  I'm certainly not a
     Charles Gibson or Bryant Gumbel.  But I think for John there
     was a comfort zone of knowing he was talking to someone who
     has been around a clubhouse" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 1/13).  
          NOTES: In Richmond, Jerry Lindquist gives ESPN an "'A'
     for attempting to do the right thing" with its "NHL Rules!"
     telecast.  But Lindquist adds, "Generally, it was too basic
     for the hardcore fan. ... There was too much to assimilate
     and it became ponderous after a while" (RICHMOND TIMES-
     DISPATCH, 1/13)....The College of Charleston has reached an
     agreement with Comcast Sports Southeast to air nine of the
     school's 14 remaining regular-season men's basketball games
     (CHARLESTON POST & COURIER, 1/12)....Former alpine skier
     Carrie Sheinberg will provide on-air commentary for Oxygen
     Media's "We Sweat" coverage of the FIS World Cup (Stars &
     Strategies)....ABC has "decided not to renew" the contract
     of golf analyst Mark McCumber and will use Gary Smith for 16
     events in 2000. ABC will also "try out" Billy Ray Brown "for
     at least two events," including the WGC-Andersen Consulting
     Match Play Championship (GOLF WORLD, 1/14 issue).
