CAVS/GATEWAY AGREE ON THE GOLDEN ROAD TO UNLIMITED DEVOTION

Cleveland's Gateway Economic Development Corp. and the
Cavs have reached an agreement where Gateway will pay three-
fourths of the $2M in "disputed improvements to Gund Arena,
but that the team will not make repairs in the future
without discussing them with Gateway first," according to
Janet Cho of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. The "tentative
deal announced yesterday ends a squabble over repairs dating
back" to '96. The deal calls for Gateway to "assume
responsibility for more than" $1.5M, with the Cavs accepting
responsibility for about $406,000. The list of repairs
included such "costly items as repainting the arena,
equipment repairs, new carpeting and upgrades in the heating
and air conditioning systems." The deal also allows Gateway
to deduct $467,000 from its $2.5M debt to the Cavs.
Gateway, the team's landlord, questioned whether the Gund
improvements fall under regular maintenance -- which the
team is responsible for -- or "capital repairs," which are
deducted from the team's rent payment (PLAIN DEALER, 1/13).
