SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL HAS CBS/HOST CLOSE TO $700M DEAL

CBS and Host Communications are close to "finalizing a
multiyear agreement under which Host will retain the
marketing rights to NCAA championship events," including the
Div. I-A men's basketball tournament, according to Langdon
Brockinton of the SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The 11-year deal,
which sources said would begin in the 2002-03 academic year
and extend through 2012-13, could be valued as high as
approximately $700M. After its 11-year, $6B TV deal with
the NCAA, CBS is now "essentially selling the marketing
rights to Host." Host currently is the NCAA's exclusive
sponsorship sales and licensing agent in a five-year deal
reportedly worth $75M. That deal is set to expire in 2002.
Under the new deal, CBS and Host will "work together to
market the NCAA year-round." For more on this story, see
this week's issue of the SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL (11/29).
