          DEAN SMITH appeared on ESPN's "Up Close" with Gary
     Miller last night and discussed his new book, "A COACH'S
     LIFE."  Smith: "You'd say I don't want to be out in the
     public then why did I do the book, I'd say I don't know.
     ...I don't know whether it's a good book. I'm here to say it
     is.  I have no clue."  Smith said that he did not renew his
     contract with CBS because "the book had to get done."  Smith
     agreed to do eight appearances to promote the book, to which
     Miller commented, "There were lines 5 1/2 hours long [to see
     Smith]" ("Up Close", ESPN, 11/23)....NBA Commissioner DAVID
     STERN will be among eight inductees into the NJ Sports Hall
     of Fame.  Ceremonies will be held May 10 at the Meadowlands
     (Bergen RECORD, 11/24).....The WASHINGTON POST's Amy Shipley
     examines fan behavior toward pro athletes in a front-page
     Sports section cover story and writes, "The seemingly
     unprecedented display of fan misbehavior in recent months
     has raised disturbing questions about the culture
     surrounding American fandom" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/24).

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown. SBJ’s Tom Friend also joins the show to share his insights into NBA viewership trends.
