MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

TAKING A GAMBLE? CT-based casino The Mohegan Sun has
been named presenting sponsor of the Coaches vs. Cancer
Challenge, a two-day NCAA basketball tournament that will be
held November 24 & 26, 2000, in the Meadowlands and feature
UConn, Old Dominion, Clemson and the Univ. of KY (Coaches
vs. Cancer). In Albany, Mark Singelais wrote on The Mohegan
Sun sponsoring last weekend's Central CT State basketball
tourney and called it "odd, even hypocritical" after noting
that the NCAA is "sensitive about student-athlete gambling."
The casino paid the guarantee money for the visiting teams,
provided the championship trophy and sponsored the
tournament banquet (Albany TIMES UNION, 11/20).
NOTES: Electronic Arts (EA) has agreed to pay $81M to
be the "dominant provider of games" on AOL and to buy online
game maker Kesmai for $31M in cash and securities. Under
the five-year deal, EA's new online business subsidiary,
EA.com, will "run the AOL Games Channel" (WALL STREET
     JOURNAL, 11/23)....The SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Daniel
Kaplan cites a "well-placed source" as saying that the
Senior Men's Tennis Tour "is in talks" with PaineWebber
Group to take title sponsorship of a new tournament in
N.Y.'s Central Park next year (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/22
issue)....In N.Y., Paul Tharp notes that Internet companies
are "splurging much of their bankrolls" to purchase Super
Bowl spots. Hotjobs.com Exec VP/Advertising Dean Harris,
whose company had an ad during last year's Super Bowl and
purchased two ads this year: "Our business grew five-fold
after the ad; it really worked for us" (N.Y. POST, 11/23).
