BRETT, LAMAR OUT OF THE HUNT TO BUY ROYALS; IS STURM IN?

After Miles Prentice's "formal rejection" by MLB to
purchase the Royals, both Lamar Hunt and George Brett said
that they "will not submit ownership bids" to the team,
according to Steve Rock of the K.C. STAR. Brett, who
"expressed interest" in the franchise in '95, said, "We're
not getting back in. We have no interest." Hunt: "Our
hands are so full. It's really not something we're
logically interested in." Rock reports that a potential
bidder may be Donald Sturm, who's still negotiating a $461M
deal for the Nuggets, Avalanche and Pepsi Center (K.C. STAR,
11/12). Sturm's attorney Paul Jacobs, on the Royals: "I
can't say that he wouldn't bid, but it's not anything he has
expressed an interest in" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 11/12).
REFUND! Meanwhile, Rock reports that Prentice paid an
application fee of "no less than" $25,000 and, "all told,"
spent "well into the six digits" during his pursuit of the
franchise. It's possible that Prentice "may seek
compensation" from MLB or the Royals (K.C. STAR, 11/12).
GIVING BACK: In Denver, Greene & Keating report that
Sturm gave the Univ. of Denver $655,000 yesterday for
teaching awards at the school. Sturm has donated $21M to
the school, where he has served as a trustee for seven
years. Sturm said that gift isn't a PR move: "You think I
need to prove my reputation? No" (DENVER POST, 11/12).
