Jordan Brand UNC B-Ball Uniforms Not Impressing Fandom
Published October 8, 1999
The Univ. of NC (UNC) men's basketball team's new Jordan Brand uniforms were unveiled earlier this week and "not even New Coke got reviews this bad," according to Jeffrey Shelman of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. The new look, seen at goheels.com, feature an interlocking "N" and "C" instead of the traditional "North Carolina" scrolled across the front of the jersey, and has been described by UNC fans as "awful," "terrible" and "ugly." The uniforms were designed by Alexander Julian and Jordan's Jumpman Nike division. Julian said he's "surprised" at the negative reaction: "It was done with good intentions and respect for the school. ... The New York Yankees don't say `Yankees' across the front, they just have the logo." Nike has called the new style "a throwback to an older look" and said that Michael Jordan "did not have a lot of involvement" with the design. Replica uniforms will be available in stores "before the holiday season" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 10/8).
