          Padres RF TONY GWYNN has been named the '99 ROBERTO
     CLEMENTE MAN OF THE YEAR.  The award, which is presented by
     John Hancock, is given to the MLB player who combines
     outstanding skills on the baseball field in addition to
     devoted community service (MLB)....In N.Y., Jesse Angelo
     reports that as part of a management shakeup, Internet
     start-up Digital Entertainment Network will name company CEO
     and former LPGA Tour Commissioner JIM RITTS as Board Chair
     (N.Y. POST, 10/27)....The improved relationship between
     umpire JOHN HIRSCHBECK and Indians 2B ROBERTO ALOMAR,
     "nearly three years" after Alomar spit in Hirschbeck's face,
     is profiled by Ken Rosenthal of the Baltimore SUN. 
     Hirschbeck: "If you can't forgive and forget and move on
     with things, it wouldn't make you a very good person"
     (Baltimore SUN, 10/27)....TV GUIDE's Jason Cohen reviews the
     new children's TV series, "THE JERSEY," a show about teenage
     "sports fanatics" which airs on the Disney Channel on
     Fridays.  The show features cameos from such athletes as
     LISA LESLIE, COBI JONES and KEVIN MILLWOOD.  Cohen: "Yes,
     sports logic is occasionally suspended, and the show is
     heavy on Disney/ABC/ESPN crossovers (the only place you'll
     see more of GARY MILLER is on Up Close).  But then, the Boys
     and Girls Clubs of America also gets a plug and the object
     lessons ... are delivered with humor and energy by the
     show's young cast" (TV GUIDE, 10/30 issue).
