ITALIAN VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE WARNED NOT TO MESS WITH SOCCER

A print ad placed by an Italian volleyball league has
resulted in a government committee warning the league "not
to be too critical of soccer," according to a report in AD
AGE. The ad, created by Milan-based Biasi Lando, depicts
the clash between armored riot police and violent fans at a
'97 soccer match between Italy and England. The ad reads,
"The bleachers are not trenches, but a place to watch
friends," with the tag line: "Change the Game. Come to
Volleyball." The ad "immediately triggered a formal
protest" from the national soccer league to CONI, the
national Olympic Committee which oversees both soccer and
volleyball. CONI ruled the ad "misrepresented soccer" and
has ordered it "withheld from publication" (AD AGE, 10/14).
