UPTON TO HOLD HEARING ON OLYMPIC CONTROVERSY IN WASHINGTON

IOC Director General Francois Carrard is scheduled to
appear before U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) and his House
Commerce Committee panel today which is investigating the
Olympic bid scandal. Upton's spokesperson David Woodruff
"would not say" whether Carrard's appearance "is enough for
Upton to drop plans to subpoena" IOC President Juan Antonio
Samaranch. Others scheduled to testify today: former ACOG
execs Billy Payne and Andrew Young; USOC President Bill Hybl
and former senators Howard Baker and George Mitchell
(DESERET NEWS, 10/13). In Salt Lake, Linda Fantin obtained
a copy of Hybl's statement he will be make today and writes
that it "centers on the blitz of reforms enacted by the
USOC." Hybl, in the statement: "The USOC could have done
more to oversee the Atlanta and Salt Lake City bid
processes. If we had done so, we would probably not be here
     today" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 10/14).
SPREAD FRED: In Atlanta, Rebecca Carr profiles
Committee Chair Upton and writes, "If what friends,
colleagues and his own family have to say about him is any
indication, Upton won't stop until he has uncovered every
misspent dollar." Upton: "The discovery period is over.
We've identified the mistakes. My charge is to restore the
integrity of the Olympic Games. We're going to demand that
things are changed" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 10/14).
