PUBLIC ENEMY? SOUTH FL VOTERS MAY NOT SUPPORT NEW BALLPARK

A proposal for a new Marlins ballpark that uses public
funding "is striking out" with Broward County voters,
according to a new survey by the Ft. Lauderdale SUN-
SENTINEL. The telephone poll, conducted between September 28
and October 3, asked 419 "likely" voters "if they would
support" a $300M bond issue backed by property taxes to help
pay for a new ballpark. Around 81% polled said that they
were against paying for the stadium this way, 13% were for
it and 6% were undecided. A proposal to use tourist taxes
instead of property taxes "fared slightly better, but still
was turned thumbs down by likely voters." Univ. of FL
political science professor Stephen Craig, who helped
administer the poll, said that the Marlins' ballpark effort
"appears to be suffering from general anti-tax feelings and
the team's recent losing record." The survey has a margin
     of error of +/- 4.9% (Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 10/10).
