Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and his family "have signed a
deal to build a Cowboys-themed golf complex" in Grapevine,
TX, according to Richard Alm of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS, who
wrote that the team's memorabilia will "pervade the
clubhouse and sports bar" and that team-branded golf
merchandise will be sold at retail shops. The golf course
"has yet to be approved" by Grapevine, but the City Council
will discuss the issue tonight. TX-based Evergreen Alliance
Golf, which owns, operates or manages about 40 golf courses,
approached the Joneses with the idea. Evergreen VP Tony
Apollaro "declined to say" how much the project would cost.
The course, to be built by Blue Star Land, the Joneses' real
estate company, will be open to the public, but the "primary
market will be corporate golf outings" (DMN, 9/20).
MR. JONES WILL BE ALRIGHT: Jerry Jones was interviewed
on ESPN and said, "I am for revenue sharing. But what I
want to do is only have revenue sharing when a club needs
it. And so it's kind of hard for me to think about a team
getting several million dollars in revenue when they're
already making several million dollars." ABC Sports/ESPN's
Lesley Visser noted that when the NFL's licensing agreement
expires in 2003, Jones "will go to war to take back the
Cowboys logo and market the team himself" (ESPN, 9/20).
