FINAL ANALYSIS: RECORD CROWDS GRACE FLUSHING MEADOWS

          A crowd of 584,490 attended the two-week event, setting
     a U.S. Open attendance record (N.Y. POST, 9/13).  In Ft.
     Worth, Simon Gonzalez writes the previous high was 559,544
     in '97, the year Arthur Ashe Stadium opened.  The total
     attendance figure set a record "not just for the U.S. Open,
     but for any" tennis tournament (STAR-TELEGRAM, 9/13).  
          U.S. BLUES? USA TODAY's Christine Brennan, on Andre
     Agassi's and Serena Williams' singles victories: "Tennis is
     back.  This is a sport that thrives on the cult of
     personality, that desperately needs U.S. stars to feed
     corporate sponsorship and network interests.  It has them
     now" (USA TODAY, 9/13)....Nike runs a full-page ad in USA
     TODAY congratulating Agassi (THE DAILY).
