DOES TEMPORARY GRASS FIELD FIT THE BILL IN FOR GIANTS, JETS?

Tomorrow's Jets-Giants preseason game at Giants Stadium
will be played on a "temporary grass field," and the teams
are "at odds over whether to make the grass the permanent
playing surface" next year, according to Bill Pennington of
the N.Y. TIMES. Jets coach Bill Parcells, who "has not
given his qualified support" for a grass field: "Someone has
got to convince me you can play 26 games on grass in one
year. As [Jets President] Steve Gutman says: 'Good grass is
good, but bad grass is no good.'" However, Giants coach Jim
Fassel and Exec VP John Mara "are eager to make grass the
year-round playing surface." Giants co-Owner Wellington
Mara said that "if the grass field were a race horse, it
would be `leading at the pole.'" But Gutman adds, "It's an
ongoing process. We have to talk about it. We haven't had
the kind of meeting yet that allows us to have all the
information to make a decision" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/27).
