Comets G Kim Perrot passed away yesterday at the age of
32 after an "eight-month battle" with cancer. In Houston,
W.H. Stickney reports, "A moment of silence will be observed
prior to the start of each home game, and players around the
league will wear black armbands through the end of the
regular season." WNBA Dir of Media Relations Mark Pray said
each team will "show a video tribute [to Perrot] in the
arenas" during its final home game (HOUSTON CHRONICLE,
8/20)....In Chicago, Dave Van Dyck, on how two Chicago-based
tracks can "survive": "Two tracks? Don't count on it. And
put your money on the NASCAR-backed venture in Joliet [IL]
if it comes to either/or. These days, what NASCAR wants is
what racing does" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/20)....ESPN.com's
Jamie Trecker wrote on MLS and Commissioner Don Garber under
the header, "Seven Suggestions For Garber," and said, "Too
often, [broadcast] announcers don't know the players, what's
going on on the field, or even the basic rules of the game.
This is the biggest impediment MLS faces toward getting non-
soccer fans involved in the sport" (ESPN.com, 8/19)....LPGA
Tour Commissioner Ty Votaw said that an "incident" between
golfer Pat Bradley and caddie Dale Jones is "settled."
Votaw: "I have fined Pat." Bradley "accused" Jones, who
caddies for Dale Eggeling, of coughing while she was "trying
to execute shots" (Jerry Potter, USA TODAY, 8/20)....USA
TODAY's Hal Bodley, on the Mets-Cubs two-game series next
March in Japan: "The name of this game is money. No way
would the Cubs and Mets agree to the grueling travel
involved in opening their season March 29-30 in Tokyo
without financial incentives." Bodley said that "lower-paid
players will be paid about" $50,000 (USA TODAY, 8/20).
