LEAGUE NOTES

NEW ADDITION? Northeastern Univ.'s Center for the Study
of Sport in Society Dir Richard Lapchick said "maybe it's
time to take a look at NASCAR" as part of its annual "Racial
and Gender Report Card." Lapchick, on possibly adding
NASCAR: "We've been expanding that racial report card every
year. ... It's probably overdue" (USA TODAY, 8/12).
MORE NOTES: Mystics G Valerie Still said the ABL "was
more like a mom-and-pop business" compared to the WNBA.
Still: "We knew a lot of the fans. You could look up into
the stands and call out some of the names." More Still, on
the Mystics average attendance of 12,000: "There's no way
I'm going to get to know them all, but it's nice to have
that kind of a crowd" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/12)....The Pro Hockey
Players Association and ECHL are "close" to a new CBA, which
would raise the salary cap to $9,000 per week for each 20-
man roster, up from $8,250 (Biloxi SUN HERALD, 8/11)....In
Richmond, Bob Lipper writes that Isiah Thomas' purchase of
the CBA is a "shot in the arm for the" league and a "shot
upside the head to the IBL" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 8/12).
