Dolphins QB Dan Marino has inked a two-year deal for an
"undisclosed sum" with NY-based Internet company
theglobe.com to launch a Web site at danmarino.theglobe.com,
according to L.A. Lorek of the Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL.
Marino will provide the content in exchange for a
"percentage of all" e-commerce sales on the site. The site,
set to launch on Labor Day, will feature "Dan's journal" --
a free newsletter mailed to registered users with Marino's
pre-game and post-game comments -- a Q&A section and a photo
gallery. But a "big part" of the site will be "dedicated"
to e-commerce. theglobe.com co-CEO Stephan Paternot said
that the "sports section has been one [of] theglobe.com's
most popular online attractions," and that "in the future,"
the company "plans to team up with other" pro athletes.
Dolphins Owner Wayne Huizenga sits on the company's BOD (Ft.
Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 8/11). Marino: "The best thing
about this site is that I won't have to deal with you
reporters anymore. You can just go there to get whatever
you need" (PALM BEACH POST, 8/11).
