CHERNIN OUT A PIECE OF HISTORY ALONG WITH MURDOCH?
Published July 9, 1999
NEWSWEEK's Johnnie Roberts profiles News Corp. Chair
RUPERT MURDOCH and Fox Group CEO PETER CHERNIN, and writes
that it was Chernin who "approved" News Corp.-owned TM3 -- a
women's cable channel in Germany -- to "pay more than" $400M
"to land soccer's popular European Champions League,
stunning the soccer-crazed nation." Chernin said the deal
"was akin to the Lifetime Channel buying the rights to the
NFL." Roberts, on the deal: "It was a strategy inspired by
Fox's ... purchase of NFL viewing rights" (NEWSWEEK, 7/12).
