SORRY, CHARLEY? CASSERLY ATTORNEY WANTS SKINS TO FOOT BILL
Published July 9, 1999
Robert Bennett, the attorney for Redskins GM Charley
Casserly, "is demanding" that the team pay all of Casserly's
legal bills "stemming from the lawsuit" filed by failed
Redskins bidder Howard Milstein, according to Mark Maske of
the WASHINGTON POST. But Bennett "has received no reply to
his demand made in letters sent recently" to Jack Kent Cooke
estate reps and Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder. Though
Bennett claims in his lawsuit that the team is "legally
obligated" to pay Casserly's legal bills, several attorneys
said that if it was "determined" that Casserly was acting on
his own "when he took the actions that resulted in the
lawsuit," the Redskins would not have to pay. Casserley and
Cooke have until next week to respond to Milstein's lawsuit.
The "wrangling" comes at a time when Snyder is preparing "to
take official control" of the Redskins and Casserly "awaits
word on his future with the" team. Sources have said that
Casserly "may have to accept a diminution in his powers as
part of a front-office reorganization" if he wants to remain
as the team's GM (WASHINGTON POST, 7/9).
DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH? In St. Paul, Charley Walters
writes that "part of the reason" the Redskins are
considering former Vikings VP Jeff Diamond for their GM is
that Snyder "plans to give more player personnel authority"
to coach Norv Turner, "making the position more of a salary
cap and contract negotiating job" (PIONEER PRESS, 7/9).
