FACILITY NOTES
Published July 9, 1999
In Atlanta, Glenn Hannigan wrote that Philips Arena
features "massive steel columns ... that spell out" Atlanta,
"sort-of." Miami-based architectural firm ARQ, which
designed the arena, "left a little room for interpretation,"
as they elected not to use "crossbars" on the sign, making
the "As" look like "upside-down Vs." ARQ architect Bernardo
Fort: "The word Atlanta is more readable if you squint your
eyes. We wanted to keep some of the mystery in it" (ATLANTA
CONSTITUTION, 7/8)....Denver-area taxpayers "will learn
today if the price tag on the new Broncos stadium will climb
beyond" $360M, as the stadium board is scheduled to meet
this morning to "set the cost for the new stadium, being
built for the 2001 season." Board members and the Broncos
have "promised the team would pay for any extras" (ROCKY
MOUNTAIN NEWS, 7/9)....Bills officials will tour the
Rochester Institute of Technology and the Univ. of Rochester
"as possible new training camp sites within the next few
weeks." The city's St. John Fisher College "remains the
leading candidate" (DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE, 7/9)....The Lennox
Lewis-Evander Holyfield fight will "still be in Las Vegas in
the first two weeks of November." Whether the fight will be
November 6 at Mandalay Bay or November 13 at the Thomas &
Mack Center "is still to be determined" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-
JOURNAL, 7/9)....Kansas Speedway Corp. President Grant Lynch
said that "because of demand of hospitality suites" at the
facility, "consideration is being given to increasing the
number of suites that will be available" in its
construction. Long-term lease agreements have been secured
for all of the original 32 suites (K.C. STAR, 7/9).
