LEAGUE NOTES
Published July 6, 1999
In Nashville, Joe Biddle examined the "deep concern"
about college basketball players turning pro early, and
noted that "it was hailed as a great day" when Tiger Woods
left Stanford after his sophomore year to join the PGA Tour.
Biddle: "For some reason, basketball players are expected to
stay in school. Make oodles of money for Big State U. If
they wreck a knee in the process and their pro career
crashes around them, oh, well" (TENNESSEAN, 7/5)....Fusion
Investor-Operator and MLS Expansion Committee Chair Ken
Horowitz was in Rochester last Friday night for an A-league
Rhinos game. Horowitz: "Rochester has a good shot to be an
expansion team. I'm very confident." The league "will
likely expand" by two to 14 teams in 2001 (Rochester
DEMOCRAT & CHRONICLE, 7/3)....The FINANCIAL TIMES' Patrick
Harverson wrote on the European Commission's ruling that
Formula One's TV contracts were illegal and profiled F-1 CEO
Bernie Ecclestone. Harverson, who noted that Ecclestone
"has wriggled out of difficult situations before":
"Ecclestone will launch a vigorous defence of his business
deals, but it is likely to prove a frustrating and time-
consuming experience" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 7/3)....WNBA
President Val Ackerman "dazzled" the "predominantly female
audience" at a recent meeting of "potential" season-ticket
holders of Miami's new WNBA team. Heat coach Pat Riley, on
Ackerman: "When I am listening to her and watching her react
to everything that has to do with the WNBA, it reminds me of
what leadership is really about" (SUN-SENTINEL, 7/4).
