FULL COUNT FOR EXPOS? MLB HAS YET TO SET DEADLINE FOR PLAN
Published July 6, 1999
While several potential U.S. ownership groups keep a
watchful eye on the Expos' situation, MLB "has not set a
deadline to present a workable plan to keep the franchise in
Montreal," according to Stan Olson of the CHARLOTTE
OBSERVER, who wrote that "there is a sense that time is
running out after three deadlines have been missed." MLB
Dir of PR Richard Levin: "There's no timetable for the
Expos. But I would think it needs to be sooner rather than
later." Meanwhile, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig "appears
intrigued by the possibilities" of the team relocating to
Charlotte, where the Hornets and Panthers "have prospered."
Selig, in a statement released last Friday: "We are very
positive on the Charlotte market, but it is not appropriate
at this time to comment on it." Charlotte Regional Baseball
Partnership Chair Johnny Harris has said that there has been
"interest" in Charlotte from more than one team, the other
"believed to be" the Twins, and sources report that Bank of
America "is involved in the effort to bring" a team to the
city (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/3). Olson, on talk of the Expos
moving to Charlotte: "Yeah, I know we've heard it all
before. But this time it smells different. This time,
something's going on. ... The Expos appear ripe for the
picking" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/4). In Montreal, Bob
Elliott floated Charlotte as the "most likely" destination
for the Expos, should they relocate (TORONTO SUN, 7/5).
