TRIBE MAKES BOFFO OFFER TO LURE DODGERS FROM FLORIDA
Published July 6, 1999
The Fort McDowell Indian Community in AZ "has made its
best offer" to the Dodgers, who are "contemplating leaving"
their spring training home in Vero Beach, FL, after 51
years, according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. TIMES. Fort
McDowell officials said that the tribe would spend $40M to
build a 12,000-seat stadium, six practice fields and offices
on a 76-acre site. Shaikin reports that the Dodgers would
then sign a 25-year lease. Tribal attorney Edward Roybal:
"This is the best the tribe can do. It will have to expire
sometime" (L.A. TIMES, 7/2).
