WNBA OFFICIALS "PLEASED" WITH ALL-STAR GAME 1.1 RATING

Despite "intentionally scheduling" the WNBA All-Star
Game during an MLB off-day, when "no other major sports"
were on TV, the league drew "a tepid" 1.1 rating on ESPN,
according to Bart Hubbuch of the DALLAS MORNING NEWS.
Although that was a 50% increase over the league's regular-
season rating, it "was seen in just 800,000 homes and
equaled what ESPN gets for a regular-season NHL broadcast."
Hubbuch: "That didn't seem to bother WNBA officials, who
were generally pleased" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 7/16).
STARS? In N.Y., Jerry Brewer writes on the WNBA under
the header, "League Waits For A Star." Brewer: "No ...
player has yet to transcend the league, sit in the middle of
its circle of stars and show the rest of the players how to
stretch their stardom further" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/16).
